INTERVIEW:

What environmental project will you create to promote the protection of Mother Earth and why?

Forests are ecological shield of the planet. While Russian forests fulfill global ecological mission, they need to be protected from fires, plant pests, illnesses, and illegal felling. These negative tendencies have been accumulating in the recent years.

What makes you proud of the country you are representing, and what can you promote about your country?

I am proud to live in Russia. Russia is the biggest country in the world. It stretches across two continents – Europe and Asia. This is a great country with the centuries-old history and traditions. People of different nations and cultures, speaking more than 100 languages live in Russia.

Forests occupy more 40% of the Russian territory. One fifth of forests and the half of coniferous forests are situated in Russia. There are 35 national parks and 84 protected woodlands in the territory of Russia. 23 objects of Historical and Cultural significance in the World Heritage by UNESCO are located on the territory of the Russian Federation.

I’d like to develop ecotourism in my country. It aims to minimize negative influence of the society upon the Nature and to maintain ecology in a stable state. Ecotourism lets people immerse in the Nature, get to know local environment, traditions and cultures of people living in this or that part of Russia. Apart from preservation of socio-cultural environment ecotourism achieves another goal – ecological education. It makes me sad to think that there are so many people who would rather spent their holidays abroad, while there are a great number of wonderful places in their own country they didn’t even hear about. Participation of local people in the touristic business will give an economic inducement to protect and preserve their Nature.

Describe your childhood/growing years.

I was born in the ancient city that was founded in 1679. I spent my childhood in this quiet and green city. As a child I loved to spend time outdoors, camping or collecting medicinal herbs. I enjoy taking pictures of the Nature. Living in such a place with pure environment I grew fond of the Nature and I feel sad to observe abuse of the environment.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?

One of the most important lessons that I learned in my childhood is to succeed. Success is movement from one object to another. I owe everything that I have achieved to my parents and those lessons, whatever bitter and painful, that i learned in my childhood. One of these lessons has to do with the game of chess: you shouldn’t give up until checkmate is achieved. And of course, you should love yourself, people and live.

What is your most memorable moment?

TBP

What is your environmental advocacy?

State of Russian forests causes anxiety and alarm. Deforestation of over 200 square hectares took place only in 2002. The most common reason of death of forests is fires. The main part of green plantations destructed by fires are located in Siberia and Far East. Insects, illnesses, industrial emissions and weather anomalies, unauthorized recreational activities on the territories occupied by forests produce the main influence upon forests. Yearly forests face attacks of pests such as gipsy moth and bark beetles, millions of hectares are affected already. Economic, ecologic and social losses can be prevented only by modern means of protections.
